Indie Producers Embrace New Canada-India Coproduction Agreement
Ottawa, February 24, 2014— The Canadian Media Production Association (CMPA) congratulates the Government of Canada for signing an Audiovisual Coproduction Agreement (Agreement) with the Republic of India.
India is the global leader in the number of screen-based content produced annually, and its media and entertainment industry is expected to grow to $25B later this year. The Agreement will be the cornerstone for triggering co-production and other partnership opportunities between Canadian and Indian screen-based producers.
“This signals tremendous new business opportunities for producers in both India and Canada,” says Michael Hennessy, President and CEO, CMPA. “And it is the partnerships that will flow from this deal that will allow Canadian television, film and digital media producers to substantially expand their reach, thrive in the global economy and contribute to creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity here at home.”
Once ratified by Canada and India, the Agreement will allow producers to combine their creative, distribution, technical and financial resources to create productions that will be seen and enjoyed by millions around the world. During the last ten years Canada has undertaken nearly 720 audiovisual coproductions, with combined production budgets of almost $5B.
