History of Creative BC

Creative BC’s history began with the establishment of the BC Film Commission in 1978 to promote British Columbia’s motion picture industry. Over the following decades, the commission successfully positioned the province by attracting major film and television productions and establishing B.C.’s reputation as a premier filming destination.

In April 2013, a strategic merger brought together two key organizations: the BC Film Commission and BC Film and Media (formerly British Columbia Film). BC Film and Media had been providing development and production financing to creative industries across the province since 1987, and began administering the provincial tax credit program on behalf of the government in 1996. This consolidation created Creative BC, an independent non-profit society designated by the provincial government, uniting the expertise and legacy services of both organizations under a single, unified and expanded mandate, which added four additional industries’ funding programs to advance their interconnection and their opportunities as a creative ecosystem.

Today, Creative BC serves as B.C.’s lead economic development agency for fostering growth across the creative sector: motion picture, book and magazine publishing, music and recording, and interactive digital media industries.

Who are Creative BC's Clients?

Creative BC’s clients span the creative sector (book publishing, interactive digital media, magazine publishing, motion picture, and music + sound recording), including companies, industry stakeholders, associations, the province’s creative workforce itself, and policymakers relevant to the creative industries.

Creative BC strives to sustain and elevate the creative industries in British Columbia through leadership, collaboration, and investment.
