BC Celebrates Books on BC Book Day

To celebrate the contribution the publishing industry in BC makes to the culture and economy of the province, the BC Government is declaring April 22^nd BC Book Day. British Columbia’s book publishing industry is thriving,  winning national and international awards, and selling their products across all continents.  BC Book Day comes at the end of Read Local BC, a province-wide campaign led by the Association of Book Publishers of BC (ABPBC), to highlight the excellence of BC’s publishing and writing.   

BC’s publishing industry is located across the province and produce books in all genres that reflect their region, BC, Canada and the world back to their readers. Did you know that BC is home to the largest Aboriginal publishing company in the country, Theytus Books, and one of the best and largest of children’s houses, Orca Book Publishers?

Other publishing companies such as Harbour Publishing, Greystone Books, Douglas & McIntyre and Caitlin Press have long contributed to our regional and national knowledge. Both Arsenal Pulp Press and Anvil Press in Vancouver are urban presses that focus on contemporary topics. Companies such as Oolichan Books in Fernie, and Talonbooks and New Star Books in Vancouver continue their traditions of excellence in literary publishing. The University of British Columbia Press has one of the largest academic programs in the country.

Here’s a few of the many recent BC books and their awards:

• Arsenal Pulp Press’ When Everything Feels like the Movies by Raziel Reid was a finalist for Canada Reads and earlier won a Governor General’s Award for Literature;
• Tradewind Books’ Chinese Fairy Tale Feasts by Judy Chan, Paul Yee and Shaoli Wang won the best cookbook of the year in the Gourmand World Awards;
• Caitlin Press’ Pedal by Chelsea Rooney is a finalist for the Amazon First Novel Award;
• UBC Press and Harbour Publishing have been recognized with nominations for the Basil Stuart-Stubbs Outstanding Scholarly Book.
• Orca Book Publishers’ Love You More by Susan Musgrave was chosen as the BC Book for Babies selection for 2015.
