Impacts of Industry Negotiations on B.C.
Three U.S. industry-related guild contracts are being negotiated this summer, with one for the Directors’ Guild of America recently completed, and the remaining two negotiations leading to strike action for both the Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).
Today’s strike announcement made by SAG-AFTRA has impacts North America-wide. This includes significant impact on British Columbia’s film and television industry, particularly on U.S. productions doing business in B.C. where SAG-AFTRA members are employed. Additionally, B.C. productions employing SAG-AFTRA members will be impacted. Together, these productions represent the majority of filming activity in B.C.
In our role as the economic development organization for motion picture in B.C., together with our local industry partners, we are concerned for the workforce, companies, industry, and people. The industry is evolving rapidly, business models have changed, and addressing these changes is part of a necessary industry business cycle. We respect the process and all parties. We are watching the situation closely and hope for a timely resolution, bringing business in B.C. and North America back to scale.
