DigiBC Teams Up with Netflix to Make a Multi-Year Investment in VFX and Animation Training
Netflix, the global streaming and production service, has teamed up with DigiBC in a partnership designed to strengthen B.C.’s animation and visual effects (VFX) talent pipeline.
Netflix grew its local presence in 2022 with the acquisition of two B.C.-based studios, Animal Logic and Scanline VFX. Now, through this new collaboration with DigiBC, the company is making a multi-year investment in local education, training, and mentorship.
“This is great news for B.C.’s creative technology ecosystem,” says Loc Dao, Executive Director of DigiBC. “Netflix investing directly in the next generation of talent is a tremendous opportunity for our sector and the future of digital storytelling in B.C.”
The Netflix-DigiBC Partnership: Key Initiatives
The partnership will fund a series of new and expanded initiatives designed to strengthen B.C.’s animation and VFX talent pipeline.
“We’re really looking at making different pathways accessible,” Dao explains. “Whether it’s micro-credentials or degree- and diploma-granting programs, it’s about making high-quality education accessible, and opening doors for more people to gain the skills needed to join this exciting field.”
- Scholarships to Reduce Cost Barriers. The partnership will fund full scholarships for talented students who might otherwise face barriers to high-quality education.
- New Micro-Credentials to Build Animation & VFX Skills. Working with B.C. post-secondary institutions, DigiBC has helped develop several micro-credential programs for in-demand skills locally. The Netflix partnership will support the development of a new micro-credential focused on animation and VFX, providing an accessible, industry-relevant training pathway for students and professionals looking to upskill.
- Animation DigiCamps for Youth. DigiBC’s popular DigiCamps– which give kids a hands-on introduction to various creative tech skills – will expand in 2026, introducing more B.C. kids to the world of creative technology.
- Expanded Mentorship Opportunities. DigiBC’s mentorship network, DigiConnect, will also grow thanks to the Netflix funding, offering more students and early-career professionals the chance to learn directly from experienced animators, VFX artists and studio leaders.
- A Dedicated Director for the Animation and VFX Alliance. For the first time, B.C.’s animation and VFX studios will have a dedicated representative, coordinating efforts across the subsector.
