Specific Creative Industries

Audiobooks Initiative

The Audiobook Initiative supported B.C. book publishers in recording audiobooks to reach new global markets and capitalize on this growing industry, which is the fastest-growing segment in the digital publishing industry. The initiative was designed with assistance from the Association of Book Publishers of BC (ABPBC).

The Province of British Columbia provided one-time funding for Creative BC to disburse and increase strategic supports for the creative sector.

This funding ensured that B.C. creators from each creative industry received funds with which to innovate. Funding was designed to support regional economic development, creative sector training and strategic partnerships, digital publishing and the growth of B.C.’s digital media companies in computer graphics, animation, mixed and virtual reality, games and other emerging technologies. This additional money was leveraged recipients to seize new opportunities and shape the future of B.C.’s creative sector.

Podcast Program

This pilot program supported the development, production, and promotion of podcasts by B.C.-based content producers.

Motion Picture Programs

Access 2020
This partnership between Creative BC, the Canada Media Fund (CMF) and the Canadian Media Producers Association-BC Producers Branch (CMPA-BC), provided B.C.-based producers will be eligible for up to $30,000 for the early stage development of childrenâ€s, youth and scripted drama projects for television.

The total budget for the Program is $400,000 with the CMF, Creative BC and the CMPA-BC all contributing. This is the first time the CMF has partnered with a provincial funding body and the CMPA, recognizing the strength and reputation of B.C.’s industry.

CBC Digital Production Fund

CBC and Creative BC delivered a micro-budget production fund to support the creation of video content from BC producers and creators to be showcased in connection with CBC digital platforms.

The commitment is to fund new productions that reflect, represent and reframe diverse perspectives from BC creative teams, showcasing new creative visions and furthering the careers of emerging writers, producers, and directors as they move towards the production of longer form content.

Preference will be given to projects from women, Indigenous persons, people of colour and persons with a disability to get their unique voices heard, but creators who do not fall into any of these groups may also apply for funding. It is our hope that at least 50% of successful projects will come from female creators.

CMF Early Stage Development

The Early-Stage Development Program (the Program), which forms part of the CMF Convergent Stream, allocates funding to Eligible Projects (as defined in the CMF guidelines), at the beginning of a project creative process.  The Program has two distinct access points for applicants with separate eligibility criteria for each: the Writer Access Point; and Creator Collaboration Access Point.  For clarity, Eligible Applicants, regardless of the access point, may apply to the Program with a maximum of one Eligible Project.

CMF Pre-Development

Eligible BC companies that successfully apply to the CMF Predevelopment Program (with a Letter of Interest supplied by a Canadian Broadcasters, as per CMF Guidelines 3.1.d) were able to apply to the Creative BC Project Development Fund for additional support as per the terms of that program. 

CMPA-BC Story Dept. Internship

Creative BC and the Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA) – BC Producers Branch provided one-time funding in FY2018/19 for the skills development of professionals committed to careers in writing for dramatic television.

Daryl Duke and William Vince Scholarships

The Daryl Duke and William Vince Scholarships are intended to honour the significant contributions that these individuals have made to BC’s film and television industry.

The BC Film Foundation currently offers multiple yearly scholarships to honour the memory and contributions of Daryl Duke and William Vince Scholarship, considered to be two of the founders of BC’s film and television industry.

Traditionally, two Daryl Duke Scholarships and one William Vince Scholarship are awarded each year to exceptional British Columbians who have completed post secondary studies or equivalent training at an accredited institute in their field, and are entering advanced education in film, television or digital and  interactive media. Up to $10,000 is awarded per scholarship.

Eligible disciplines include writing, directing, producing, cinematography, art direction, picture editing, sound design, visual effects and interactive media.

Documentary + Factual Development Fund

The Creative BC and Rogers Group of Funds Documentary + Factual Development Fund encouraged the development of motion picture projects in documentary and factual formats.

Uniquely, the Creative BC and Rogers Documentary + Factual Development Fund’s key feature was to support individual documentary and factual projects during early-stage development, before being greenlit by the market.

Harold Greenberg Fund

In partnership with Creative BC, the Bell Media Harold Greenberg Fund BC Shorts Program was a financing initiative designed to bolster the emerging talent in BC, this program offers 3 emerging filmmaking teams $20,000 each to make dramatic short films aimed at showcasing new creative visions and further their careers toward feature filmmaking.

IP BC Pilot

The IP BC Pilot Program supported the predevelopment of fiction, documentary and animated series, feature films and one-off programs for television and streamer platform networks and for theatrical distribution, via specific funding to enable the optioning of Intellectual Property (IP) by B.C.-based production companies, with an enhanced focus on optioning IP for adaptation that originates in B.C. or was created by a B.C.-based creator. Examples of pre-existing creative or cultural properties may include – but are not limited to – novels, creative non-fiction books, comics, podcasts, songs, magazine articles, video games and stage plays.

Rogers Indigenous Film Fund

The Rogers Indigenous Film Fund (RIFF) Program gave companies and creators financing assistance for early development work of a new project, or ‘next phase’ early development work of an existing project. Applicants were able to apply for up to $20,000 to cover qualifying activities such as research and development, community engagement, as well as scriptwriting. The program was developed in close consultation with the Indigenous community and industry.

Supported privately by Rogers Group of Funds and administered by Creative BC, the Rogers Indigenous Film Fund (RIFF) provided funding to support to emerging, early, and mid-career Indigenous filmmakers and creatives to develop new works or to continue early development of a proposed work.

Music + Sound Recording Programs

BC Music Fund

On February 11, 2016, the Province of BC announced the creation of the BC Music Fund, a $15-million investment to support the growth of B.C.’s music industry.

The BC Music Fund was administered by Creative BC through March 31, 2018, with the goals of stimulating direct investment, job creation, music tourism, increased regional activity, and the export of BC music. A full complement of funding programs were designed to stimulate economic growth and activity by investing in B.C.’s diverse music sector.

Based on feedback from stakeholders across B.C.’s music industry, Creative BC launched eight programs to support the careers of B.C. artists, live music performances, the development of music companies, training & export initiatives, research, innovation, and the growth of the B.C. music industry.

Innovation

The Innovation Program supported innovative projects, platforms, and services that addressed the needs of B.C.’s music industry during COVID-19 via the Amplify BC fund.

 

Industry Catalyst

The Industry Catalyst program supported projects that build the capacity of underrepresented groups in B.C.’s music ecosystem.

The program was part of the three programs supporting Indigenous and underrepresented groups working and living  on the unceded traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations through the Vancouver Music Fund. The Province of British Columbia matched funds via Amplify BC, extending these programs to be available to people across B.C.  

Funding was distributed province-wide through three programs: Demo RecordingMusic Video, and Industry Catalyst. These programs supported new and emerging artists and industry professionals who experience systemic barriers.

Music Video

The Music Video program supported the creation of music videos to build audiences for new and emerging artists from underrepresented groups living in the Province of B.C.  

The program was part of the three programs supporting Indigenous and underrepresented groups working and living  on the unceded traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations through the Vancouver Music Fund. The Province of British Columbia matched funds via Amplify BC, extending these programs to be available to people across B.C.

Showcase BC
The one-time Showcase BC program provided immediate support to B.C. musicians affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Funded by the Province of British Columbia, this program was administered by Creative BC.
Micro-grants were awarded to B.C. artists who were eligible and had previously applied to Amplify BC programs, to support livestreaming, songwriting, and professional development. Online performances were free, and available to the public at Showcase BC, or through the hashtag #ShowcaseBC.
