About Creative BC
Creative BC is an independent non-profit society created and supported by the Province to sustain and help grow British Columbia’s creative sector, comprised of five distinct industries: motion picture, interactive digital media, music and sound recording, and both book and magazine publishing. Combined, these activities serve to stimulate production of intellectual property and promote B.C. as a leader and destination of choice in content creation. Creative BC is both an industry catalyst and an ambassador for B.C.’s creative sector, helping it to reach its economic, social, environmental, and creative potential both at home and globally.

Creative BC’s history began with the establishment of the BC Film Commission in 1978 to promote British Columbia’s motion picture industry. Over the following decades, the commission successfully positioned the province by attracting major film and television productions and establishing B.C.’s reputation as a premier filming destination.

In April 2013, a strategic merger brought together two key organizations: the BC Film Commission and BC Film and Media (formerly British Columbia Film). BC Film and Media had been providing development and production financing to creative industries across the province, while also administering the provincial tax credit program on behalf of the government. This consolidation created Creative BC, a non-profit society designated by the provincial government, uniting the expertise and legacy services of both organizations under a single, unified mandate.

Today, Creative BC serves as B.C.’s lead economic development agency for fostering growth across the creative sector: motion picture, book and magazine publishing, music and recording, and interactive digital media industries.
