Jamie Thomson
Haida artist Jamie Thomson has been in the West Coast music scene since the age of fifteen. Jamie's musical voice is a combination of blues, folk and rock. Supported by Creative BC's Career Development program, Jamie recently released his latest music video called The Elder, partnering with Squamish Elder Dennis Joseph on the music. This project is part of his latest album Who We Walk With, Who We Stand With.
The storyline encompasses Squamish and Haida legends. On Highway 99, an apparition of an Elder in regalia appears in passing vehicles. The Coast Salish refer to this spirit as the Hitchhiker, because of his propensity to hop into the back seat. The Elder relates to the Haida and Coast Salish long-standing peace pact, as well as the many legends that came before.
Jamie Thomson's guitar style was first influenced by BB King, Albert King, and Eric Clapton, among others. He formed his own family-based band called Intellifunk, featuring his daughter Gillian on vocals and his son Robert on bass in an all original funk and blues band that travelled Canada. They performed at the Rogers Centre, The El Macombo (Toronto), The Windsor (Winnipeg), The Vancouver Jazz Festival and The Yale Hotel. They were nominated for several awards at the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards in Toronto and the Aboriginal People’s Choice Awards in Winnipeg.
