About the Film Commission

Established in 1978, the Provincial Film Commission at Creative BC delivers and support and resources both the motion picture industry and the communities, stakeholders and various partners that contribute to its longevity.

Creative BC’s Provincial Film Commission is crucial to sustaining motion picture activity in B.C. It promotes and facilitates the province’s production capabilities that make B.C. both a global centre of creative excellence and a full-service hub. We strive to continually improve and innovate our services in order to best serve the industry and contribute to the growth and success of the sector as a whole.

About British Columbia
British Columbia is a large and diverse province, more variable physically and biologically than any comparable region in Canada. It spans 11 degrees of latitude and 25 degrees of longitude and covers 948 600 km2.  Mountains feature prominently in the geography, environment, and culture of British Columbia; so too does the coast, which is intricate in detail and dotted with islands throughout its length.

Map of British Columbia

Generally speaking, British Columbia is a cool, moist, mountainous, forested region. However, the province also has areas with Mediterranean-type, semi-arid, subarctic, and alpine climates. It has extensive plateaus, plains, and basins as well as several roughly parallel series of mountains.

Forests dominate the vegetation but there are also extensive areas of grasslands, wetlands, scrub, and tundra. (Source: SFU Data Warehouse 2007)

Reel Green™
Sustainable production efforts in British Columbia were formalized in 2016 ago through the Reel Green™ initiative, a resource centre with a collection of best practices to help productions reduce their environmental impacts and improve their overall environmental footprint. The initiative has grown to become a leader in sustainable production strategy and action, with well over 20+ industry funders, 30+ national partners, and 10+ committees working on specific areas of action including Industry Best Practices, Clean Energy, and Circular Economy.

Creative Pathways™
Creative BC, the Motion Picture Production Industry Association (MPPIA), and B.C.’s motion picture industry developed a six-part strategy to deliberately increase workforce capacity through more fair and balanced representation. The strategy acts on recommendations from a recent labour market study, funded by the Province of British Columbia and the Government of Canada through their Sector Labour Market Partnerships program (SLMP).

The design, development, and implementation of this website and its two targeted equity streams, Setwork, and Meet 10, is a secondary SLMP project also funded by the Province of British Columbia and the Government of Canada, secured by industry “seed” funding from Warner Bros. Discovery Access Canada.
