TAIWANFEST is an annual cultural festival held in Vancouver and Toronto. The original focus of TAIWANfest was to celebrate Taiwanese culture, however, in recent years, the festival expanded to include dialogues with local Canadian communities including Indigenous communities, Asian-Canadian communities, and other Asian cultures. It is reported to be the largest English/Mandarin bilingual cultural festival in Canada.
TAIWANFEST’s Artistic Vision
The Stories of Independence
Dialogue with Indonesia and Malaysia
When Indonesia left Dutch colonization and Malaysia left Great Britain…
what happened to the world?
After generations of cultural evolutions and lifetimes of acquiring wisdom…
is our world better than before?
If we learn from the many struggles that occur between Peoples and Nations…
would the world be more peaceful?
Who likes to be treated as one among many?
Who would rather be treated as one of a kind?
Who gets to write the stories of independence, yesterday, today or tomorrow?
Without freedom, can the stories really be independent?
Without room for reflection, can anyone freely imagine independence?
